Efraim Katsir was born in Kiev, Ukraine, in 1916. For a long time, the scientist-politician bore the surname Kachalsky, it was under the name Efraim Kachalsky that most of his scientific works were published.
At a very young age, the boy emigrated to Jerusalem with his family. It was there that Efraim Katsir received his education as a biophysicist and began active political activity. In 1973, he won the election and became President of Israel. It was at this moment that he changed his surname from Kachalsky to Katsir. After the end of his presidential term, Efraim Katsir withdrew from political activity and devoted himself to scientific research in the field of biochemistry.
