Eric Clapton is a British guitarist, singer and composer, one of the most influential musicians in the history of rock music. He began his career in the 1960s as a member of the bands The Yardbirds, Cream and Blind Faith. Clapton is also known for his solo work, including the hits "Tears in Heaven", "Layla" and "Wonderful Tonight".
His nickname is "Slowhand" (Slow Hand), which, however, has nothing to do with his guitar playing technique. It dates back to Clapton's time with The Yardbirds. He often tore the strings during performances, and while he was changing them, the audience slowly clapped their hands. This inspired the manager of The Yardbirds, Giorgio Gomelski, and he came up with the comic nickname "Slowhand" for Clapton.
Eric Clapton is the only musician inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times: as a member of the bands Cream and Yardbirds, as well as as a solo artist.
