The Godfather, a 1972 cult drama directed by Francis Coppola, has become a cultural phenomenon. Although Pacino was a relatively unknown actor at the time of filming, the role of Michael Corleone was a breakthrough in his career. Despite his successful film career, Pacino's main passion remains theater. In the 1960s, he was one of the founders of The Actors Studio troupe, and his role in the play "Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie?" won him his first Tony Award in 1969.
