In the second half of the 1970s, Mayer and Ebert worked together on the film "Who killed Bambi?" with the Sex Pistols, but filming was interrupted after the first day of filming. The group's manager, Malcolm McLaren, hoped to use the film as a means of entering the American market. In October 1977, Russ Mayer began work, having managed to shoot only a few shots, none of which the band took part in.
There were incredible rumors surrounding the disruption of filming. According to one version, which was subsequently picked up by the media, it was Grace Kelly's involvement that put a decisive point in the production of the film. According to Russ Mayer, "Grace Kelly was involved in this. As an important shareholder of Fox, she is going to stop all support for the film company in Europe."
Later, Mayer made statements that the manager of the Sex Pistols, Malcolm McLaren, "made false promises of financing and was ruined," and McLaren, in turn, said that the studio 20th Century Fox withdrew support after reading the script written by Roger Ebert.
Anyway, the sets created at Bray Studios in Berkshire were destroyed. Mayer and the Sex Pistols have sued each other. In 1980, the New York magazine Film Comment would publish the director's comments and regrets that this picture "could not have been made."
