Black Sabbath is a British rock band formed in Birmingham, in1968 and had a significant influence on the development of rock music, primarily heavy metal. Black Sabbath's debut album is considered one of the first heavy metal albums, which also laid the foundation for the subsequent development of doom metal. Ten of the band's albums were in the top ten of the UK Albums Chart.

Black Sabbath's self-titled debut album marks the birth of heavy metal as we know it now. This is a place where "metal" has become a separate form of music, different from "rock". The band influenced the work of many bands, including: Iron Maiden, Metallica, Soundgarden, Nirvana.

While performing in England in 1969, the band Earth (now Black Sabbath) realized that they were mistaken for another English band called Earth. The inspiration for their new name came from a movie theater across the street from the band's rehearsal space, where the 1963 horror film Black Sabbath starring Boris Karloff was shown. Other band names were considered to be The Polka Tulk Blues Band, named after the talc brand, and Blues Band Margarine.
