Like many great literary figures, Samuel Langhorne Clemens decided to adopt a pseudonym at the beginning of his writing career. He tried several different names—Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass, Sergeant Fatom and Josh—before settling on Mark Twain, which in boat jargon means two fathoms or 12 feet. As the writer himself said, he borrowed the name from the captain of a ship from New Orleans. However, the researchers also built another theory, according to which the pseudonym was taken from a sketch in an 1861 naval magazine. The author borrowed not only the names, but also the prototypes of the characters.
Interestingly, Mark Twain wrote many of the characters in his adventure novel from his loved ones: naughty Tom Sawyer is the restless Mark Twain himself as a child, Aunt Polly is the writer's strict mother, Sid is a brother with whom there was a contradictory relationship, and Becky Thatcher from the book is Twain's classmate and first love, with whom he he corresponded throughout his life. Twain endowed the characters with genuinely realistic personalities and put his childhood thoughts into the thoughts of the main character, which made this book familiar to everyone.
