Dmitry Likhachev is an outstanding scientist of the twentieth century. His creative legacy is extremely extensive and diverse, his research, journalistic articles and notes concerned various aspects of cultural history — from the art of Ancient Russia to the garden and park styles of the XVIII-XIX centuries. But first of all, the name of D. S. Likhachev is associated with the poetics of ancient Russian literature, to the study of which he made a huge contribution.
Olga Belobrova is a specialist in the history of ancient Russian literature, a senior researcher at the Pushkin House, where she was invited to work by D. S. Likhachev. In the field of ancient Russian literature, as noted by the Soviet philologist-medievalist O. V. Tvorogov, "O. A. Belobrova is, if not the discoverer, then at least one of the most authoritative researchers." The subject of her study was the synthesis of words and images in various genres of ancient Russian art and literature. The source-based features of O. A. Belobrova's works are a reflection of her belonging to the textual school of D. S. Likhachev.
The book "The Great Legacy" is one of the most famous works by D. S. Likhachev, dedicated to the real masterpieces of Russian literature of the pre—Petrine period — works that are known all over the world. Among them are "The Word about Law and Grace" by Hilarion, "Walking across Three Seas" by Athanasius Nikitin, the writings of Ivan the Terrible, "The Life" of Archpriest Avvakum and, of course, "The Word about Igor's Regiment".
In the work, D. S. Likhachev notes that ancient Russian literature cannot be studied separately from other spheres: "Literature and all kinds of arts are closely related to each other and constitute, as a whole, one of the most cognitive aspects of the development of culture."
