Hermann Oldenberg is a German philologist, researcher of Sanskrit, historian of religion and Indian culture, and the largest European scholar of Buddhology.

The study introduced into scientific circulation whole complexes of previously unknown sources on the history of Buddhism, which allowed to reveal the original history of this world religion in a new, more accurate and deep way. Oldenberg made a bold attempt to reconstruct the historical life of the Buddha, including everyday life, the development of his worldview, religious and moral activities, and the nature of preaching. The book became the most famous study of Buddhism among those published in Russia before the revolution.

On the flyleaf of the book is the signature of Ivan Sabashnikov, a prominent psychiatrist and the first translator of the presented book. In addition to his regular medical practice, Sabashnikov was an amazing connoisseur of Eastern philosophy, spoke twelve languages, translated a lot of fiction and religious and philosophical literature, including the classics of Indian literature by Rabindranath Tagore.
