Alexander Peresvet is a legendary warrior monk, in the Battle of Kulikovo he defeated the Tatar hero Chelubey in single combat before the main battle, dying himself.
According to the most common historical version, before the start of the battle, Peresvet participated in the traditional "duel of heroes". On the part of the Tatars, he was opposed by the hero Chelubey, who, according to legend, was not only distinguished by great strength, but also by special skill in military training. Both opponents were on horseback, armed with spears.
Having received a fatal wound, Peresvet continued to stay in the saddle, was able to reach the formation himself and only died there. Immediately after the duel, the battle itself began. In the Russian Orthodox Church, Peresvet is canonized.
