The mammoth tusk composition "Three Huayan Saints" is a rare piece of artistic carving that combines ancient natural materials and the deep philosophical tradition of Buddhist art. The composition is based on a massive mammoth tusk, which retains its natural curve. Its arc forms a majestic line resembling the vault of the celestial space or the outline of sacred mountains, against which a complex multi-figure scene unfolds.
Along the inner side of the tusk there is a panoramic composition made in the technique of the finest relief. A whole spiritual world is unfolded on the surface of the bone: architectural ensembles of temples and pagodas, bridges, terraces and pavilions are intertwined with figures of monks, pilgrims, celestial beings and sages. In the center of the composition, a group of main characters is highlighted — the "Three Huayan Saints", who are key figures of the Buddhist tradition of the same name. They symbolize wisdom, compassion, and a perfect understanding of the universe.
The figures are surrounded by a multitude of followers and spiritual beings, creating an atmosphere of solemn assembly. The master skillfully distributes the scenes along the entire length of the tusk, so that the composition is perceived as a continuous narrative. Each figure has individual features, gestures and poses, and the architectural elements are executed with jewel-like precision, conveying the smallest details of Oriental temples.
The plot of the Three Huayan Saints is related to the philosophy of the interconnectedness of all things, one of the key ideas of the Huayan Buddhist school. Artistically, this idea takes the form of a complex panorama, where every figure, every building and every element of the landscape are part of a single harmonious space.
The composition is perceived as a monumental work of decorative and applied art, in which the natural power of an ancient tusk, virtuoso carving technique and rich spiritual symbolism combine into a single image of harmony, wisdom and eternal order.
