There are things in our world whose rarity cannot be questioned. Staunton Deluxe chess set made of the rarest wood - Makassar ebony or makassar for short, became just such a chess set. The amazing beauty of the makassar tree grows only in one place in the world - on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. The peculiarity is also that due to its rarity and value, makassar wood is prohibited from export from the island. It is sold only occasionally, during periods of sanitary logging, and in very small batches - this allows us to say that no one has ever created such chess before.
The history of Staunton chess design takes us back two centuries to 1851, when, on the eve of the First International Chess Tournament in London, there was a need for universal chess understandable to players from all over the world. The design of the chess pieces belongs to the talented London artist Nathaniel Cook, but the name Staunton chess is in honor of the famous chess master, historian and grandmaster Howard Staunton. He liked the noble figures so much that he allowed his facsimile to be placed on boxes with figures. An interesting fact: the prototype of the "Staunton" horse with a mane trimmed in the antique manner was one of the horses depicted on the frieze of the Parthenon, an ancient Greek temple decorated by the famous Phidias in the 5th century BC, stored in the British Museum.
