The vice Admiral led the first line personally, from the captain's bridge of the flagship Empress Maria. Osman Pasha could not have expected that the Russians would enter the bay, protected by the fire of coastal batteries, at that time it was believed that such an attempt would doom the brave man to defeat. Osman Pasha's losses were enormous: all the ships of the squadron were destroyed. The Turks lost 3,000 sailors, 1,000 paratroopers and almost 500 guns. Nakhimov's losses amounted to 38 people killed and 210 wounded. Two ships needed repairs. The news of the Sinop victory caused a great resonance in Russia and abroad. With the victory in the Battle of Sinope, the Russian fleet gained supremacy in the Black Sea and thwarted Turkish plans to land troops in the Caucasus. After winning the battle, Vice Admiral Nakhimov was ready to march on Istanbul, which was left without cover from the sea. Panic reigned in the Turkish capital, the authorities were in disarray, and the sultan had no money to continue the war. However, Nicholas I reasoned otherwise and ordered the fleet to return to Sevastopol. Many historians believe that this was a fatal mistake by the emperor. The brilliant victory of Vice Admiral Pavel Nakhimov served as a kind of "trigger" for the outbreak of the Crimean War.
