Gustave Doré is a French sculptor, graphic artist, and painter. He created about eighteen thousand illustrations and drawings for the most famous works of world literature, including the Bible. During his lifetime, he gained recognition and introduced the fashion for illustrations. Gustave was a very observant young man. Spending a lot of time in the halls of the Louvre and the Paris National Library, he studied all the subtleties of ancient engravings and entered them into his notes.
The text is printed from the edition issued with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia for the 100th anniversary of the publication of the Bible in Russian (1876-1976); the illustrated material is from the French Bible in illustrations by G. Doret in 1866. (the order of placement of the engravings of this edition has also been preserved).
