Tehilim ("Psalms of David", lit. "Praises") is the first book of the third section of the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) – the Scriptures. It contains 150 psalms, in turn divided into five books. According to the Talmud, the Tehilim were written by ten different authors, but King David completed the final revision of all the psalms. Most psalms are hymns praising the commands, glory, and providence of God. The Psalms are one of the most revered books of the Tanakh by Jews, they are part of both private prayers and the synagogue liturgy. Since the early Middle Ages, psalms have also had a great influence on European literature and art.
The new Russian translation of the Tehilim is made in accordance with the understanding of the text by classical Jewish commentators.
