M. Y. Lermontov is the second, after Pushkin, figure in Russian literature of the first half of the XIX century. It can be said that the duel and the death of Pushkin awakened genuine poetic genius in Lermontov: after 1837, such masterpieces as "To the Death of the poet", "Prisoner", "Branch of Palestine", "Three Palm Trees", "Both boring and sad", "Goodbye, unwashed Russia ...", "The Prophet."..
Along with the poems of 1828-1841, the present collection includes the universally recognized Lermontov masterpieces of Russian romantic poetry, as well as "Masquerade", the pinnacle of Lermontov's drama, and "Hero of Our Time", which has become a new page in the history of classical Russian prose. Russian Russian poet summed up the "golden age" of Russian poetry and marked the beginning of the "century" of the Russian novel.
