The first Russian translation of the novel by the classic of French and world literature Victor Hugo (1802-1885), made by a permanent employee of the magazine "Time" Julia Petrovna Pomerantseva (?-1873). The phrases and poems she left in French and Latin are taken from the translation by Ernest Karlovich Watson (1839-1891), and some of the comments are from the translation by Evgenia Ivanovna Konradi (1838-1898). The text is printed according to the first publication in the magazine of the brothers M. M. and F. M. Dostoevsky "Time" (1862).
The book is decorated with the works of masters of book illustration, many of which are being published for the first time after more than a century of interruption.
