Konstantin Skalkovsky is a public figure, scientist, and economist, about whom few people know nowadays. Meanwhile, at the end of the 19th century, he was one of the most famous representatives of public thought in tsarist Russia. Being a well-rounded person, he wrote on a variety of topics. His works were devoted to ballet, European countries, modern life, etc., he published travel notes and serious scientific articles. His journalism was very popular, as it was written in a lively, light language, with irony in the best traditions of feuilletons.
This gift book includes the author's reflections on women. It must be said that initially Skalkovsky's views on emancipation were revolutionary for his time. He was a fan of George Sand, advocated for the freedom of the fair sex. However, over time, his views changed to completely opposite ones. The leather-bound book that you see here is an excellent example of conservative, patriarchal writings on the topic of the family and the place of women in it. The first notes on this topic were published in 1886, were successful and underwent 11 reprints. Now the reflections may seem naive, but this gift edition will allow modern readers to imagine what our ancestors' views on the women's question were. The artist Jean Granville.
