At the time when duels were allowed, and at the time of their prohibition, rules governing the conditions for resolving conflicts between people were equally required when it came to such a subtle concept as honor. At the same time, the duel and the concepts of morality and law constantly came into conflict when the concept of protecting honor and dignity collided with the constant desire of the state to settle these issues by legal means, through the court. That almost everywhere and always ran into the strong belief prevailing in high society that "shame can only be washed away with blood."

Even at the time of the resolution of duels, legislative acts were ineffective, which contributed to the emergence of unwritten rules established by custom. At the time of the ban on dueling, these rules were the only ones. The parties to the conflict could only choose them.

"If the Dueling Code is outlawed, if it is impossible to have a law established by the government, then let's not hesitate and give this name to the rules that honor obliges us to, since honor is no less sacred than the laws of the government." It is these words in French that precede the text of the "Dueling Code" by V. Durasov, published in 1912. At that time, it was already the 4th edition, which allows us to think of it as a fairly authoritative source in this field.

The concepts of honor and duel are fanned by romance and interest in them does not weaken. This book completely repeats the text of the publication: Durasov V. Dueling Code. 4th ed.
