Oral traditions about the pious Peter and Fevronia existed long before their canonization by the Moscow Church Council in 1547. Obviously, it was then that Metropolitan Macarius instructed the church writer and publicist Ermolai-Erasmus to write the life of the holy spouses. However, the "Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom" turned out to be far from the traditional hagiographic canons both in form and content. Ermolai-Erasmus created a moralizing story, permeated with fabulous epic motifs, consonant with Western medieval short stories. As D.S. Likhachev said: "The charm of the Novella lies in the simplicity and clarity of the presentation, in the sedate slowness of the story, in the ability of the narrator not to be surprised by the amazing, in harmony with the calmness of the narrator, the simplicity and lack of malice of the characters." Despite the fact that it was never included in the code of the Great Makaryev "Minions", for which it was written, the story immediately became a favorite reading of Russian people: from royalty to commoners. This work is still one of the masterpieces of ancient Russian literature, and the author is among the famous writers of the Middle Ages. Ermolai-Erasmus managed to create not just a literary monument, characterized by an exciting plot, vivid elaboration of characters, clarity of dialogues, and compositional completeness... "The Tale of Peter and Fevronia" has become an anthem of conjugal love and fidelity, human wisdom and spirituality.
