The Book of the Ruler of the Shang Region is one of the most significant monuments of the socio-political thought of ancient China. It outlines the teachings of Shang Yang (IV century BC), the founder of the Legist school, who advocated a despotic form of government. The teachings of Shang Yang, adopted by the Confucians in the period from the third century BC to the third century AD, contributed to the transformation of Confucianism into a state ideology, had a huge impact on the further development of legislation and legal theories in China, and remains relevant to modern Chinese politics.
