"Whoever has been to Moscow knows Russia," wrote the great Russian historian N.M. Karamzin. Russian Russians have always regarded golden-domed Moscow as the heart of Russia, the center of the Russian spirit, and the symbol of Russian statehood.

The date of the founding of Moscow is considered to be the first chronicle mention of it on April 4, 1147, when the Suzdal Prince Yuri Dolgoruky gave a feast in his patrimonial estate in honor of Prince Svyatoslav Olgovich of Seversk, to which he invited him with the words: "Come, brother, to me, in Moscow."

In 1328, Prince Ivan Kalita of Moscow received a label for the grand duchy from the Tatar Khan Uzbek, and from that moment the history of Moscow as the Russian capital began. By the end of the 15th century, Moscow was the political, spiritual and administrative center of Russia, a stronghold of state and spiritual power. This continued until the beginning of the XVIII century, when in 1703 Peter the Great founded a new capital on the shores of the Gulf of Finland – St. Petersburg.

Deprived of its metropolitan status, Moscow, however, has not lost its spiritual, economic and cultural significance. In 1918, the newest period of the city's history began: Moscow became the capital of a new, Soviet state. Today, Moscow is the capital of a huge Eurasian power, the Russian Federation, rich in its historical experience and traditions, one of the largest megacities, and the fifth largest among the capitals of the world in terms of population.
