The hero of the Patriotic War of 1812, the "proconsul" of the Caucasus, Alexey Petrovich Ermolov (1777-1861) was the son of the era of greatness and power of Russia, which gave rise to a galaxy of outstanding Russian thinkers, scientists, generals, poets, whose meaning of life was to serve the Fatherland. According to A. S. Griboyedov, this was the "sphinx of modern times" – a complex and contradictory personality: a man of strong will and independent views, a patriot who did not recognize authority, a constant oppositionist to the authorities and at the same time a faithful son of the Fatherland. The epoch shaped Ermolov's personality – and he himself was one of its active creators.
