V. I. Dahl is known to the modern reader as an outstanding Russian lexicographer, the author of the "Explanatory Dictionary of the living Great Russian language". But, in addition to the dictionary, V. I. Dahl collected and published in 1862 "Proverbs of the Russian people" - a collection that included more than 30 thousand units - proverbs, sayings, sentences, tongue twisters, sayings and jokes, riddles.
The proverbs and sayings reflect the realities of Russian folk life, beliefs and omens, folk beliefs, and ideas about the world around them. The collection of proverbs by V. I. Dahl can be considered an ethnographic encyclopedia of Russian folk thought.
