The book by A.Nechvolodov, a full member of the Imperial Russian Military Historical Society, is published in full in accordance with the rules of modern spelling. The text is accompanied by hundreds of works of Russian historical painting and ancient illustrations, including previously unpublished works. The author used all available primary sources, as well as the works of all significant Russian historians of the XIX century. Of particular interest is the extensive historiographical material: from epics, songs and chronicles to the beginning of the XIX century.

The work was a desk book in the family of the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II.
