Taking the king's life is certainly a murder of murders. To decide on such a step, you need good reasons. Why, in the words of a contemporary of Emperor Paul, did Russians look at this monarch as a formidable meteor, looking forward to his last minute? Why, at the news of the death of the first person in the state, people on the streets cried with joy, hugging each other, as on the day of Bright Resurrection? After all, he did not reign for very long! There is a certain mystery here, and the emperor himself was the same mystery: a people's advocate and a cruel despot, a reformer and a destroyer, an amiable cavalier and a flighty tyrant, a short-tempered stubborn man and a pleasant companion.
