The first edition of "Sketches of the Crimea" was published as a separate book in 1872 and was a stunning success. Numerous illustrations appeared only in the third edition of the book. From the preface: "This book is not a "Guide to the Crimea", and has never claimed this title; from it the reader will not know how much to pay for a hotel room, and through which stations you can get to a particular city. If my book can be considered a portrait of Crimea, it is only a portrait of its eternal, unchangeable features, its inner soul, and in no way those clothes and hairstyles that he may wear on one or another passing day."
