The Caucasus was little studied in the second half of the 19th century, but attracted increased attention as the most interesting region of the Russian Empire with rich nature, history and culture. The famous writer Evgeny Lvovich Markov (1835-1903) vividly depicted him in his essays.
A fascinating story about Ossetia, Georgia, Dagestan with their ethnographic, archaeological, natural-historical features is accompanied by picturesque pictures of nature, history and everyday life of the Caucasus. Markov's essays became the first Russian popular book about this region, covering it in its entirety. The facsimile edition is made while maintaining the original format and high-quality images.
