In the 1830s, two social movements developed in Russia. The first was Westerners who believed that Russia should follow the path of Western European countries. One of the most famous Westerners is Pyotr Yakovlevich Chaadaev. The second was the Slavophiles, who believed that Russia was a unique, original country that should follow its own special path.
In the Philosophical Letters, Chaadaev gives an outline of the philosophy of history, saying that Russians should develop a completely new philosophical view of history, with which they could realize their place in the world. Such ideas seemed absolutely unacceptable to the bearers of so-called official patriotism.
The impact of the “Philosophical Letters” was amazing. When Nicholas I read them, he noted in the margins that this nonsense could only belong to the pen of a madman. Soon, not without the emperor's knowledge, a decree was issued on the daily examination of Chaadaev by a physician for recognition as a madman. But after he signed a paper under which he pledged never to write anything, the police calmed down and the medic stopped coming.
