The Caucasus was little studied in the second half of the 19th century, but it attracted increased attention as the most interesting region of the Russian Empire with a rich nature, history and culture. The famous writer Evgeny Lvovich Markov (1835-1903) vividly portrayed him in his essays.
A fascinating story about Ossetia, Georgia, and Dagestan with their ethnographic, archaeological, and natural-historical features is accompanied by picturesque paintings of nature, history, and everyday life in the Caucasus. Markov's essays became the first Russian popular book about this region, covering it in its entirety. The facsimile edition was made while maintaining the original format and high-quality images.
