It is interesting to communicate with an intelligent person. This thought often comes to mind when reading the memoirs of Charles Talleyrand (1754-1838), an outstanding representative of classical diplomacy, Minister of Foreign Affairs of France, who held this post under Louis XVI, the anti–royalist Directory, Emperor Napoleon, Louis XVIII and Louis Philippe. What is the reason for the incredible success of this, according to contemporaries, the father of lies and the receptacle of all vices? Is it only in incredible intuition, unscrupulousness and greed, as follows from the well-established ideas about him as a political werewolf and a crafty courtier? It's not that simple! No wonder Talleyrand suggested to be afraid of the first impulses of the soul as the most noble. Perhaps that is why his memories sometimes resemble an adventurous adventure novel about the Musketeers and the guards of the cardinal.
