The second volume of the History of Russian Art is devoted to the main events and names of Russian fine art in the historical space, which was once called the "Petersburg period". Programmatic "Westernism" forms the super-plot of this period. A number of collisions emerge within it, which make up the problematic field of presentation: the fate of the antithesis "Moscow – Petersburg"; the symbolism of the sea and the ship in connection with the iconography of high-rise compositions in Russian architecture; the principle of New European "regularity" in urban planning practice; ways of assimilating and developing a genre system and a promising image of the world in art, where memory was still alive iconography, and finally, the change in the cultural roles of Moscow and St. Petersburg at the end of the period under review.
