Over the course of several decades, Islam conquered Spain and part of southern Italy, overcame the desert expanses of the Sahara, converting the population of black Africa and opposing local cults. Then he spread across the boundless Asian regions until he reached India, where he met with Vedic cults and Buddhism. In the north, Islam reached Oxiana (now in Uzbekistan), surpassing the conquests of Alexander the Great to approach the borders of the Chinese Empire. The territories where Islam was established witnessed the heyday of the Greco-Roman, Judeo-Christian and subsequently Greek Orthodox civilization in the West, and the Persian-Zoroastrian in the East. The legacy of these civilizations lies at the heart of the artistic Islamic experience.

In the cultural and, consequently, artistic environment, the Islamic world absorbed the creative energy, technology and traditions of subordinate peoples, extremely rich and diverse.
