The famous treatise of the Florentine Renaissance statesman Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527) “On the Art of War” marked the beginning of a new period in the history of military affairs. In his work, Machiavelli gave a critical assessment of the European armies of the XV-XVI centuries and proposed to transfer the experience of the best ancient generals of Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece to the modern Italian armies. The treatise contains various recommendations on the organization of military affairs and the management of troops. The main principles of military strategy and tactics are analyzed. The rules for the selection of recruits, the specifics of arming and using infantry, cavalry and artillery, the rules for building troops on the march and rebuilding into combat order, the principles of defense and siege of fortresses and many other topical issues of military affairs are described. The basic rules of the art of war, formulated by Machiavelli more than 500 years ago, remain in demand today.
