About this product
According to an ancient legend, George killed a snake (dragon) that devastated the land of a pagan king, and saved the princess, who was bred to be eaten by a snake, from death. This legend was often interpreted allegorically: the princess is the church, the serpent is paganism.
In the West, St. George is the patron saint of chivalry and crusaders.
Images of St. George have been found since ancient times on grand ducal coins and seals. Since the time of Dmitry Donskoy, he has been considered the patron saint of Moscow. The image of a horseman striking a dragon with a spear, which appeared in Moscow heraldry from the turn of the XIV—XV centuries, was officially fixed in 1730. Currently, the figure of St. George striking a snake occupies a central place in the coats of arms of Moscow and the Russian Federation.
