Alexander Nevsky is one of the most important symbols of Russia, canonized by the Orthodox Church. He played an exceptional role in a dramatic period of Russian history, when the country was attacked simultaneously from two sides. Alexander Nevsky, who had never lost a single battle in his entire life, showed the talent of a commander, where he felt more power behind him — in battles with the West. And he remained in history an outstanding diplomat when it came to a stronger rival, the Golden Horde, preventing the ruinous campaigns of the Mongol—Tatars against Russia. Thanks to this prince, Russia strengthened its borders and did not disappear as a state from the historical map. In addition, largely due to the activities of Alexander Nevsky, Orthodoxy has been preserved in Russia. In 2009, according to the results of voting within the framework of the project "Name of Russia", he was declared a person — a symbol of the nation.
Alexander Nevsky is depicted in Russian iconography and painting either as a monk or, since Peter the Great, when the former was prohibited by a special decree, as a warrior. In this case, the figure of Alexander Nevsky is based on the classic image from the 1942 triptych by Pavel Dmitrievich Korin. This triptych is interesting in particular because it was installed as a banner on the banks of the Volkhov during the battles for Novgorod during the Great Patriotic War.
