In 1713, Peter the Great, in honor of the worthy behavior of his wife Ekaterina Alekseevna during the unsuccessful Prut campaign of 1711, established an order named after the martyr Saint Catherine. It was originally called the Order of Liberation and was intended only for Catherine. Russian Russian army was surrounded by the Turkish army in that campaign, and Catherine, according to legend, donated all her jewelry to bribe the Turkish commander Mehmed Pasha, as a result of which the Russians were able to conclude a truce and escape. Ekaterina Alekseevna received the signs from the hands of the emperor on November 24, 1714. As it is written in the "History of the Army War".
The Empress remained the head of the order for life, even if she was widowed. Since 1855, the cross of the highest class was covered with diamonds, the lowest with rock crystal. The oval medallion in the center of the cross shows a seated saint. The reverse side depicts a family of eagles exterminating snakes at the foot of the ruins of the tower. The explanatory inscription undoubtedly refers to Catherine: AEQUANT MUNIA COMPARIS (works compared with her husband).
