Tigran Petrosyan is a Soviet chess player, the 9th world champion from 1963 to 1969, and an international grandmaster.
He is a nine-time winner of chess Olympiads as a member of the USSR team.
He was nicknamed the "Iron Tiger" for his defensive skills. Ten times in a row (from 1953 to 1980) he played in candidates competitions and in World Championship matches, including twice as the reigning world champion.
Some sources call him the most difficult-to-beat player in the history of chess.
