Mikhail Gorbachev is a Soviet and Russian statesman, political and public figure, the first and only president of the USSR. His name is consonant with the era of "Perestroika" and the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union.

During the years of his rule, Gorbachev put forward a number of peace initiatives and proclaimed a policy of "new thinking" in international affairs. The politician became the first Soviet leader to engage in a peaceful democratic dialogue with Western powers, which marked the end of the cold War and the easing of tensions in foreign policy. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1990 for his so-called contribution to the "peace process".
