Thomas Porter Whitney is an American diplomat, journalist, writer, translator, businessman and philanthropist; translator of two famous books by Alexander Solzhenitsyn "In the First Circle" and "Gulag Archipelago" into English.

A unique exhibit is presented in the Stargift collection: the first American edition of the book "The Gulag Archipelago" with a handwritten wish and an autograph of the translator.

As an American diplomat, Whitney spent nine years in the Soviet Union, about which he subsequently published a memoir. He was always interested in Soviet culture, which could not but be facilitated by his long-term stay in Moscow. Russian Russian avant-garde artists (Marc Chagall, Natalia Goncharova, Alexander Rodchenko and others) had an impressive collection of works by Whitney; for more than forty years he collected a collection of Russian books, periodicals and manuscripts, on the basis of which the Center for Russian Culture at Amherst College in the USA was created.

After completing a successful career as a diplomat, Whitney went into the bookselling business and opened a chain of bookstores (Whitney Book Shops Connecticut).

During the First World War, he collaborated with MI5, and was sent to Russia as an agent of British intelligence in order to prevent it from withdrawing from the war. I arrived there by steamer from the USA, to Vladivostok. He was in Petrograd from August to November 1917, and repeatedly met with Alexander Kerensky, Boris Savinkov and other political figures. After the failure of his mission in connection with the October Revolution, he left Russia via Sweden. The work of the intelligence officer was reflected in the collection of 14 short stories "Ashenden, or the British Agent" (1928, Russian translations — 1929 and 1992).

Winner of the Stalin Prize of the second degree (1950) and the Lenin Prize (1972). Most of Agnia Barto's poems were written for preschoolers or elementary school children. Poems are easy to read and memorize. Through them, the author addressed the child on equal terms in simple language without lyrical digressions and descriptions. The inscriptions on the silk ribbons attached to the wooden cover and the velvet lining read "A. Chekhov 1898 Siest" and just below "in memory of our buytot" (translated from French - "purchase"). It is assumed that Chekhov is referring to his old friend, the artist Alexandra Khotyaintseva, with whom the writer spent long portrait sessions in the south of France in the winter of 1897-1898. According to the examination of the Historical Museum, this item has national cultural and museum significance.
