Yuri Petrovich Lyubimov is a Soviet and Russian theater director, actor and teacher. Artistic Director (1964-1984; 1989-2011) and Director (1990-2011) of the Moscow Taganka Theatre. People's Artist of the Russian Federation (1992). Winner of the Stalin Prize ll degree (1952) and the State Prize of Russia (1997). One of the reformers of the Russian theater.

Among the best productions are "The Life of Galileo" by B. Brecht, "Hamlet" by W. Shakespeare (1971), "And the dawns are quiet here ..." based on the story by B. Vasiliev, poetic performances "The Fallen and the Living", "Listen!", "Comrade, believe ...". "Yu. Lyubimov is highly endowed with feeling compositions. He is able to translate the static of a poetic episode into action even where, at first glance, there is no action. He knows how to collide contrasts on stage, keenly feels the emotional state of the viewer," wrote David Samoilov. Lyubimov's uncompromising productions became widely known not only in the USSR, but also around the world, and his theater was called "the island of freedom in an unfree country." The play based on Dostoevsky's novel "Crime and Punishment", shown in 1983 in London, was awarded the Evening Standard award.
