On February 14, millions of people around the world celebrate Valentine's Day, a celebration of love, romance and tender feelings. But where did this tradition come from and what is its history?

The roots of Valentine's Day go deep into antiquity, intertwined with pagan rituals and Christian legends. One of the most popular versions connects it with the ancient Roman holiday of Lupercalia, which was celebrated in mid-February. It was a festival of fertility, purification and the beginning of spring, during which rituals were held to ensure a good harvest and the birth of children. Young people participated in a kind of "lottery of love", pulling the names of their betrothed.

With the advent of Christianity, many pagan holidays were transformed or replaced. So, Lupercalia gradually gave way to Valentine's Day. There are several theories about who this Saint Valentine was. One of the most famous legends tells about the priest Valentine, who secretly married lovers during the time of Emperor Claudius II, who forbade marriages for soldiers. For this, Valentin was executed on February 14. Before his death, he allegedly wrote a farewell letter to the jailer's daughter, signing it "Your Valentine" – this is how, according to legend, the first "valentine" appeared.

Another version connects the holiday with Bishop Valentine of Terni, who also became famous for his kindness and helping lovers.

In the Middle Ages, Valentine's Day became especially popular in England and France. It was then that the first written mentions of "valentines" appeared – love messages exchanged between lovers. It was believed that birds began to look for a mate in the middle of February, which further strengthened the romantic aura of the holiday.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the tradition of exchanging postcards and gifts on February 14th spread around the world, especially in English-speaking countries. With the development of printing, "valentines" became a mass phenomenon, and the holiday itself turned into a commercially successful event.

Today, Valentine's Day is not only an occasion for lovers to express their feelings, but also an opportunity for everyone to show love and care for their loved ones, friends, and even themselves. Regardless of whether you believe in the legends of St. Valentine or just enjoy the festive atmosphere, February 14th remains a day when love is in the air, reminding us of the importance of the warmest and most sincere feelings.
