And even then, when life in the estate ended, the fence fell down, the houses were empty and the front garden was overgrown with grass as tall as a man, lilac bushes were blooming gratefully, clusters, like a memory, swayed majestically and covered the empty eye sockets of fallen windows and torn frames.
