The work, inspired by the popular folk story "The Dragon and the Phoenix bring good Luck," consists of two barges, the Dragon and the Phoenix. Like the miniature luxury ships of antiquity, with their heads held high and multicolored flags waving, they represent a favorable future, easy sailing and a successful return.
The eight-storey buildings are decorated with pavilions, carved beams and painted buildings with opening doors and windows. Hanging bells, elegant lamps and flags waving in the wind create an impressive and solemn atmosphere. From bow to stern, 1,265 and 978 miniature figures are placed in cabins, pavilions and towers, respectively; each of them has individual features and facial expressions, emphasizing the subtlety of artistic elaboration.
Thanks to painstaking inlay and precise assembly, numerous carved elements are harmoniously combined into a single ensemble. The composition impresses with its scale, complexity of execution and refined decorativeness, revealing a high level of craftsmanship.
