The composition of the mammoth tusk "Harmonious Joy" is an expressive work of artistic carving, in which ancient material and a mythological plot combine in the image of a world filled with tranquility and blessing. The composition is based on a massive mammoth tusk that has lain in permafrost for about ten thousand years. Its curved natural shape is used by the master as a dynamic line of movement, resembling a dragon, smoothly soaring upward and creating a feeling of majestic ascent.
The central part of the composition depicts the Buddha, a majestic and at the same time peaceful figure embodying spiritual harmony. His image is made in traditional Oriental iconography: large ears symbolize wisdom and the ability to hear the world, a calm face radiates inner balance, and smooth folds of clothing emphasize the state of rest. The Buddha sits on an elephant, an animal that is considered a symbol of strength, stability and nobility in Eastern culture.
A picturesque scene filled with movement and life unfolds around the central figure. The elephant is slowly moving forward, accompanied by various mythical creatures and animals, as if participating in a solemn procession. Among them, one can distinguish fantastic animals and decorative elements symbolizing the natural world, which is in harmony with the spiritual principle.
The special atmosphere of the composition is created by the presence of children. Their figures are depicted with soft, innocent expressions, which gives the scene a sense of joy and serenity. They surround the Buddha, play and watch what is happening, as if participating in a heavenly celebration. In Chinese symbolism, children are often associated with procreation, family happiness, and the well-being of future generations.
The whole composition is built as a smooth narrative unfolding along the natural line of the tusk. The master skillfully combines high and low relief, creating depth and complex layering of the scene. The light surface of the mammoth bone emphasizes the fineness of the carving, while the dark base in the form of elephants enhances the contrast and gives the work stability.
"Harmonious joy" symbolizes the ideal state of the world, where spiritual wisdom, natural strength and human innocence exist in unity. The work conveys the idea of well—being, peace and inner tranquility - a state in which all living beings unite in an atmosphere of joy and harmony.
The thickness of the tusk carving is approximately 37 cm.
