The mammoth tusk composition "Two-headed Dragon Boat" is one of the most impressive works of modern artistic carving on mammoth bone. This is the largest known dragon boat made from a mammoth tusk. The boat's hulls are hand-carved from two giant tusks, which in itself makes the piece unique. The work on this large—scale work lasted seven years, from 2012 to 2018, and became a real testimony to the highest skill of the carvers.
The boat is made in the form of a mythical vessel carried by two dragons — ancient symbols of strength, authority and heavenly blessing in Chinese culture. The dragon heads are positioned at opposite ends of the vessel, creating an image of movement and balance. In traditional Chinese art, the dragon is considered the guardian of good luck and the patron saint of great endeavors, so its presence gives the composition the meaning of a solemn blessing.
A multi-tiered palace stands on the deck, reminiscent of the architecture of the imperial pavilions. Its floors are filled with miniature figures of people, like participants in a big celebration or a solemn journey. The detailed carving conveys the complexity of the architectural elements — graceful balustrades, roofs with characteristic curved lines and numerous decorative details.
A tall mast with a large sail enhances the feeling of movement. Benevolent hieroglyphs are placed on the sail, expressing the wish for a "fair wind" — an ancient symbol of good luck and a successful journey. This image is associated with the idea of a favorable course of fate and successful advancement.
The composition also reflects a modern symbolic meaning. It is dedicated to the idea of development and cooperation embodied in the Chinese initiative "One Belt— One Road". Two dragons carrying the ship symbolize a double blessing and harmonious movement forward, and the sign of the "three suns" is interpreted as a harbinger of a new prosperous era.
The craftsmanship is striking in its richness of details. Each figure, architectural element and ornament are carved with exceptional precision. The contrast of the light mammoth bone and the dark carved base enhances the impression of monumentality, as if a ship rises above the waves.
The "Two-headed Dragon Boat" is perceived not only as an outstanding work of art, but also as a symbol of the path, movement and historical destiny. It is an image of a great journey in which the power of tradition, human skill and the blessing of heaven combine in a single majestic symbol.
