The veneration of holy warriors occupies a significant place in the history of Christian art and is an integral part of the culture of Orthodox peoples. Most Christian male names are the names of holy warriors. For more than one and a half thousand years, they have been implored as defenders, capable of saving with their weapons and military skills both in times of devastating disasters and in everyday adversity. The glorious deeds of the holy warriors live in the national memory, being transmitted in the texts of church services, lives, in traditions and spiritual verses. Their images were especially highlighted in temple paintings and iconography. Many famous holy warriors – George, Demetrius, Theodore Stratelates, Theodore Tyron, Nikita, Artemius, Mercury, John the Warrior, Mina, Christopher, Sergius and Bacchus, and others became widely famous as warriors and martyrs. The names of others – Arefas, Polyeuctes, Isidore, Evdokim, Prova, Tarakh and Andronik - widely revered in their early days, are not so often remembered nowadays.
The iconography of the holy warriors occupies a significant place in the art of the Christian world. The album contains unique pictorial material representing the whole variety of iconographic types and revealing the multifaceted shades of veneration of holy warriors. Based on the church tradition, the authors of the book have singled out the holy warriors-great martyrs in a separate chapter. Then the essays on the soldiers of the Byzantine period are presented. The final chapter is dedicated to Russian saints. The appendix contains a short biographical dictionary of those holy warriors, whose images are rarely found in monumental art and icon painting. The book is intended for a wide range of readers, at the same time, extensive illustrative materials, some of which are published for the first time in Russian literature, as well as a detailed overview of the iconography of each saint, will undoubtedly interest art historians, collectors, and those interested in the art of Byzantium, the Balkans, and Ancient Russia.
