A customs commissioner whose lectures on literature delighted Scottish aristocrats; an eccentric whose absent—mindedness was legendary; an enthusiastic admirer of Newton's discoveries; an erudite and passionate bibliophile; a recluse and bachelor who lived with his mother all his life - Adam Smith was not famous for this at all. He is called the "man of one book", which, akin to Newtonian "Principles" in physics, became the basis of classical political economy. Smith, who was looking for universal laws of social structure, discovered the mechanism of action of the "invisible hand" of the market. Aphoristically aptly, with noble simplicity and expressiveness, not peculiar to economic treatises, he introduced the concept of "initial accumulation of capital", described the division of labor and competition. The cornerstone of economic theory, the work "The Wealth of Nations", which became a bestseller during the author's lifetime, still reads like an adventure novel with an exciting plot.
