"SMERSH. Main Documents and Operational Materials 1943-1946" contains declassified operational documents and photographic materials from state and departmental archives, including those of the Federal Security Service (FSB), which characterize the daily work of Smersh employees to identify spies, saboteurs, terrorists and traitors. Most of the documents were previously classified.
The SMERSH organs were entrusted with the functions of countering espionage, terrorism and sabotage by foreign intelligence services, as well as combating treason in the ranks of the Red Army, desertion at the front and checking persons who were captured or surrounded by the enemy. New units were created responsible for working behind the front line and conducting radio games with the Abwehr. All of them were aimed at fulfilling the main task — a ruthless fight against all types of intelligence and subversive activities of enemy special services.
