The fundamental work of the outstanding military historian and commander of the Russian army covers the period of armed conflict in the Caucasus from the beginning of the XVI century to 1831.
Vasily Alexandrovich Potto (1836-1911) was a lieutenant General, Chief of the General Staff of the Caucasian Army, and a military historian who devoted more than half a century to the detailed study, analysis, and presentation of events in the Caucasus. Russian Russian military literature has certainly been enriched by his works covering the stages of the coming and formation of Russian power in the region, the history of the long-term Caucasian wars and the development of the Cossacks, and they are rightfully considered one of the best works on Caucasian subjects. For many years, in various places and from countless sources, the author collected disparate documents, military chronicles and archival materials in order to extract from oblivion and connect into one narrative the dramatic events, the course and development of which determined the special role of the Caucasian War in the history of the Russian state.
Each volume of the presented collection is devoted to the period of the administration of the Caucasus by one or another governor, a certain stage of the armed confrontation in this region, and military campaigns led by various commanders of the Russian army.
This military historical research was in such demand that even before the last volumes were published, a second edition was undertaken, according to which the first four volumes of the reprint reproduction are published. The last fifth volume was recreated based on the first edition of the collection (the printing house of the district headquarters of the Caucasian Military District).
