About this product
Art.: 015-962

Aviation played a significant role in the First World War. But even before airplanes, balloons and airships appeared in service. This book is devoted to the history of these aircraft in our country. They were used for aerial reconnaissance and correction of artillery fire, protected cities from raids, and in peacetime served to study the atmosphere and stratosphere, and were used to solve cosmonautics problems. Automatic balloons are still being used today.

Russian and Soviet aeronauts have written a number of glorious pages in the history of world aeronautics. They own many world records for altitude and flight duration, interesting design solutions and priorities in the field of aerostatic aircraft applications. Over the years, the author's team has been collecting archival documents and memoirs of veterans to write this book, which is the most comprehensive work on the history of Russian aeronautics.

With the abundance of publications on the history of aviation, so far there has been no generalizing work on the history of domestic lighter-than-air vehicles - balloons and airships. The proposed book fills this gap. (This statement of the authors is somewhat strange, because in the 90s a two-volume "Domestic Aeronautics" was published, among the co-authors of which was Pavlushenko. - Ed.)

The authors sought to cover as fully as possible all aspects of the development of domestic aeronautics, including military, scientific and sports. The boundaries between them are sometimes very difficult to draw, since scientific research was often carried out by military balloonists on military balloons, and sports records were set during scientific flights by civilian and military aeronauts. The history of educational and scientific institutions and public organizations of Russian aeronautics is also described. Sports aeronautics was covered only until the 50s of the XX century. For readers interested in the current state of sports aeronautics, we recommend the magazine "Aeronaut", published since 1995 by V.G. Latypov.

The discovery of archival funds previously inaccessible to researchers gave the authors the opportunity to highlight in the book the issues of the stratospheric program of the USSR, German-Soviet and American-Soviet cooperation in the construction of rigid airships, the pre-war helium program of the USSR, as well as a number of other subjects.

The work uses materials from the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ARAN), the Russian State Archive of the Navy (RGA Navy), the Russian State Archive of Film and Photographic Documents (RGA KFD), the Central Archive of Film and Photographic Documents of St. Petersburg (TSAKFD SPb), the Russian State Military Historical Archive (RGVIA), the Russian State Archive of Modern Political History (RGASPI), the Russian State Archive of Economics (RGAE), the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation (CAMO of the Russian Federation), the Scientific Memorial Museum named after N.E. Zhukovsky (NMM), the Dolgoprudny Historical and Art Museum (DICHM), the Dolgoprudny Design Bureau of Automation (DKBA), documents from private collections, books and periodicals, as well as information gleaned from conversations with veterans of Russian aeronautics.
